STILL / Photography
“If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.”
~ Lao Tzu
In times when we’re faced with challenges so great and complex, this quote reminds me that change starts within each of us. So in the spirit of starting with myself, I’m always looking for ways to find stillness each day. Photography is one way that I practice and create stillness.
I recently had the chance to chat with the wonderful Bea Perkins from Leica Camera for an Instagram Live, where we talked about all of this and more. You can watch that here.
Leica also interviewed me for their blog, which you can read here :)
As part of the Leica Women Foto Project, Leica Camera USA is seeking three U.S. photographers to receive an award to support a personal project that is relevant to today’s social and political climate. The mission of the Leica Women Foto Project is to encourage and empower photographers to demonstrate the importance and impact of a female's point of view. The award serves as a catalyst to reframe how we see, how we think, and how we express our visual narrative. If you have a story to tell, apply or share with someone who you think would be interested!
I am super grateful for the time I get to spend simply examining things and reflecting on feelings. To be able to capture any remnants of these thoughts and emotions in a still image (regardless of the fact that I am still very much a beginner!) has been very cathartic.
I hope that you’re able to find/ create space for stillness, in whatever shape that takes, knowing that if we can create peace within ourselves, it’s possible to create that in our world.
